Description/Inspiration:

I used the visual language of lines, form, and colors to create a composition which may exist with a degree of interpretation. Its origins relays the message of the strength of a woman, mom, auntie, and grandma in Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. Each Native woman's journey is a revealing story of strength, courage, and wisdom. For generations, our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and daughters have played a major role in maintaining our culture, protecting our families, fighting for our people, all while caring for their families and community. The lines form a strong Indigenous woman carrying out her duties of life while carrying her baby on her back. All that Indigenous women endure and do day to day, they still find the strength to take care of others.

Artist Bio/Statement:

I am an Indigenous land protector, and activist for climate action and human rights, utilizing my art to fight the impacts of colonialism. My deep connection to the lands of Turtle Island, ancestors, and Indigenous way of life guides me in everything I do, including my art. My art focuses on 'Indigenizing' and decolonizing, with the goal to break down colonialism. Art in this way brings everyday people into a moment of experience, understanding that experience is a virtue. Looking at my work puts you inside a moment to experience the happiness, the sadness, the history, the heartbreak, the trauma, and the everyday lived occurrences shared in our Indigenous experience. All of my pieces are inspired by the Indigenous way of life even with abstract pieces because pull from my perspective as an Indigenous woman to create these pieces.
