You and your guests will have the rare opportunity to visit the studio of 2022 KMA Art Gala Honoree, Huma Bhabha, in her Poughkeepsie studio.
Huma Bhabha's (b. 1962, Karachi, Pakistan, lives and works in Poughkeepsie, New York, U.S.) monumental sculptures, installations, photographs, and works on paper are informed by a visual vocabulary that references a constellation of influences from across chronologies and geographies, mediums, and the genres of science fiction, horror, and the grotesque among others. Her totemic figures are mediations on the human form that transcend time and place, allowing the artist to explore universal concerns around war, colonialism, identity and displacement.
The artist has been the subject of international solo and group exhibitions at: Casa Wabi Foundation, Oaxaca (2022); BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2020); 22nd Biennale of Sydney (2020); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2019); Yorkshire Sculpture International, Leeds and Wakefield (2019); Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2018); The Contemporary Austin (2018); Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2018); 56th Venice Biennale (2015); MoMA PS1, Long Island City (2012); Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia (2012); and the Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, Colorado (2011), among others. Bhabha's work is featured in public collections including: Centre Pompidou, Paris; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
