Internationally known for his color wood engravings, letterpress printing, and handmade books, Gaylord Schanilec has often focused his attention on the wildlife, landscape, and culture of the upper Mississippi. His highly collected and unique fine press books explore his interests and experiences as well as his hometown landscapes and communities. From rural culture to the urban side of the Mississippi River, Schanilec's wood cuts, wood engravings, and printings from found objects illustrate local landscapes, historical anecdotes and natural science investigations. He is the proprietor of the press Midnight Paper Sales, located in Stockholm, Wisconsin.
