Shasta Historical Society was formed January 18, 1930, with interest in pioneer history and in historical landmarks. The original purposes of the Shasta Historical Society were to obtain, preserve, and perpetuate the early history of Shasta and other counties of northern California and the pioneers thereof; and to identify and preserve the places of historic and romantic interest. In the years since 1930, Trinity, Siskiyou, and Modoc Counties have organized historical societies covering their particular areas, and have enthusiastic, successful organizations. The Shasta Historical Society serves as the largest non-university center for historical research in California north of Sacramento. The library and archives host more than 3,000 researchers, students, and teachers each year, & over 40,000 Photographs Rare Books Pioneer Family Files Early Marriage Records Poll Tax Records Oral History Recordings More than 5,000 Books, Pamphlets, and Vertical Files, Cemetery Records, Early Maps, Shasta County Census Records, the Shasta College Museum Collection Registered Voter Records Family Histories Coroner's Records from 1850-1935 Early Redding City Directories. It is active in the local community, hosting various free events throughout the year including a monthly program & walking tour series. They produce the local publication The Covered Wagon. This is written by local authors and professional historians, the articles communicate stories about Shasta Counties history and its people to our local community. The Shasta Historical Society has an outstanding record of working with the local community to preserve history and has led the campaign to save Shasta State Historic Park. The Shasta Historical Society is committed to the education and enrichment of the community through their museums, research library, community events, and publications.
