Image Description: Inidgenous Arhuaco people celebrate the new year in the village of Mamankana, at 4400 meters above sea level in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The Arhuaco people have defended their culture and territory since the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century. This image was taken as part of a National Geographic assignment published in 2004 as Keepers of the World, about the efforts of the native peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to protect their environment and culture.


Photographer's Bio: Since the late 1980s, Stephen Ferry has traveled to dozens of countries, covering social and political change, human rights, and the environment, on assignment for publications such as National Geographic, GEO, TIME and the New York Times. Stephen's first book, I Am Rich Potosí: The Mountain that Eats Men, documents the lives of the Quechua miners of Potosí, Bolivia. His second book Violentology: A Manual of the Colombian Conflict, focuses on Colombian history, armed conflict and human rights. Stephen led a group of photographers, journalists and historians who investigated the buried history of the War of Villarrica (1954-1957) in collaboration with Colombia's Truth Commission-the resulting book La Época: Reportages de una historia vetada was published in 2022. Stephen has won honors from the World Press Photo, Picture of the Year, and Best of Photojournalism; he has received grants from the Fund for Investigative Journalism, Open Society Foundations, the Magnum Foundation and many others. He is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography.
