Description: Complete, whole, lacking nothing. These are the words that echo in my mind as I reflect on this piece and the few hours I spent with the Doughty family. At one point in our conversation Dani shared her sense of peace that their family of six is now "complete." She gestured with her hands in the form of the stone, pausing at the bottom as if to hold that word.
In the weeks following, I began to see the meaning of the word "complete," beyond the way in which Dani used it. How humble, daily care makes each of their children complete and whole, despite their various hinderances. How this love dignifies each life, saying it is complete and choosing to see it as lacking nothing. And how Dani and her husband, Jon, are made more complete in the process of patiently, persistently saying yes in a thousand big and little ways.
The speckled soapstone form is supported through its belly by a bronze and walnut device. It is held, dependent, yet complete.
