Most would assume that this table is made from rattan / wicker but it's not!
In the early 1900's wicker manufacturers (such as Heywood Brothers Wakefield) had a predicament on their hands that required them to create their own substitute to the imported raw product they so heavily relied upon.
Most raw wicker and cane came to the United States from the Orient. An embargo on rattan / wicker to the US from the Orient led to the development of " Fibre Reed " or " Art Fibre " which was produced from paper pulp that was twisted and accompanied by sizing and glue to take on the look of wicker.
This process was invented around 1900 and quickly became a significant competitor for the previously imported product.
This table ( which has been completely reconditioned) has a well figured oval ash top, a lovely woven apron , splaying legs and graceful incurved cross stretcher supports. Solid as a rock , this table is ready for another 100 years of use.
