A rare opportunity to own a piece of Vanderbilt history ! This hand chased Gilded Age Sterling Silver child's handled " mug " was a gift from Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard ( NY 1845-1924) to her newborn granddaughter, Margaret Louisa Osborn Schieffelin ( NY 1892 -1982). This mug has the following hand engraved script on the bottom :

" Margaret Louisa Schieffelin
From Her Grandmother Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard, November 27th 1893 "

The mug is furthermore marked by the prominent New York City maker Howard & Co. This mug has raised repeating foliate decoration along the rim , a cast scroll formed handle , a bulbous body with monogram , raised repousse' decoration along the base , terminating in a round footed base.
Minor dents and imperfections due to age and use.

NB : Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard was the daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt. She was an Heiress and Philanthropist who supported and funded the YMCA in the United States. She and her husband lived in a double townhouse - mansion on Fifth Ave in NYC. The Shepard's also owned " Woodlea" in The Briarcliff Manor section of Scarborough , NY which is now the home of The Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
Margaret was married to prominent NYC Lawyer, banker, and newspaper editor Elliott Fitch Shepard.
