A little bit about iconography, much like singing in church is a prayer, the painting of an Icon (or writing as they are called) in also a prayer. First the board is carefully prepared for painting according to Orthodox tradition first by gluing a holy linen, then 7 layers of gesso are applied which represent the 7 days of creation. The icon is then painted from dark values to light values, representing Christ bringing us from the darkness into light. The Icon was painted in a series of washes, while working in silent prayer, reflecting on the life of the Saint George, and praying for those, who will venerate this Icon.

This Icon took about 60 hours to paint. That is 60 hours of prayer for the lucky winner of this!

for intercession

Oh God, who didst grant to Saint George strength and constancy in the various torments which he sustained for our holy faith; we beseech Thee to preserve, through St. George's intercession, our faith from wavering and doubt, so that we may serve Thee with a with sincere heart faithful unto death.
