Nestled in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco is Nisei, the debut restaurant of Chef David Yoshimura, the former Chef de Cuisine at Michelin-starred Californios. Equally ambitious and on course to expand what Americans think they know about Japanese cooking.
Nisei refers to the American-born children of Japanese immigrants, a nod to chef Yoshimura's own heritage, and what forms the basis of his cuisine. While elegant and discreet, the modern soundtrack, friendly staff, and bold cooking ensures Nisei takes a more inviting approach than many other restaurants at this level.
Nisei is a 10-Course tasting menu format, based on California Washoku cuisine, espousing the idea of harmony in food and looking to home cooking of Japan for inspiration. It's a philosophy that focuses on principles emphasizing balance of color, taste preparations, sense, and respect to food.
General Manager and Sommelier Ian Cobb oversees the beverage program through a carefully-curated global lens.
