Also known as "Theotokos of the Passion," this icon is one of the most recognized Byzantine icons of the Mother of God (Theotokos) by both Eastern Orthodox Christians as well as Western Roman Catholics. Traditionally, it is said to be one of the icons painted by St. Luke the Evangelist, and it is known in the Western Churches (primarily the Roman Catholic Church) as Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

The Icon of the Mother of God "Of the Passion" received its name because on either side of the Mother of God are two angels with the implements of the Lord's suffering: the Cross, the lance, and the sponge.

It has been housed at the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome for centuries, under the protection of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, or the Redemptorists.
