The Comet Neowise

Passing through the inner solar system, the Comet Neowise made a spectacular appearance over Lee Canyon, Mt. Charleston, Nevada, in the Summer of 2020.

Comets are irregularly shaped bodies of matter left over from the creation of the universe. A combination of frozen water, gas, and dust, comets contain materials used in the formation of the solar system around 4.6 billion years ago.

The Comet Neowise will not reappear over Southern Nevada for another 7,000 years.

While the Comet did not pass particularly close to earth (64 million miles on July 23. 2020), its distinctive bright yellow-white dust tail and fainter blue ion gas tail dominated the western night sky for weeks.

The Comet was photographed on July 22, 2020, as it traveled 144,000 miles per hour.
