A native of Hickory, NC, Kim traveled, served, and ultimately went to Haywood Community College to learn pottery making. After returning and opening his first shop he became aware of the local Catawba Valley pottery tradition and sought out Burlon Craig, a renowned folk potter, at his shop in nearby Henry, NC. Burlon mentored him in finding and using local clay, firing a large groundhog kiln, and making the forms and glazes that distinguish Catawba Valley Pottery. Kim continues using local clay, glaze, and history as the inspiration for his contemporary take on the Catawba Valley tradition. This double-handled jar with its lug handles and alkaline glaze is a traditional Catawba Valley form. What makes this piece truly exceptional, besides its level of craftsmanship, is that the normally brown alkaline glaze came out with a greenish tint on this piece and there's some wonderful rutile blue on it as well! 11" H.
