Artist Statement: Kansas sunsets are so magical. Driving down the highway, I saw the sun start to set. The sky opened up with a burst of colors. It's a special time of day that doesn't stay one way for long. Catch it while you can! Before it fades to night. This is my first 3D piece. I love the texture the clouds give. It takes me back to that moment of simplicity given to me by the Kansas sky.

Artist Statement: This piece is special to me this year. If you take a moment to look at my piece, you will see a world of colors. As your eyes settle, you see a bird and face, then you see the flowers in the hair. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, women have the ability to grow and transform. Through life experiences, there is change and growth! I left an abusive partner exactly a year ago, and this piece comes from my heart. It is a piece of me, and I am so proud of it.

Artist Statement: My art often includes a theme of connection between all living things, as well as self-reflection and healing. The Flower of Life is one of the original sacred geometry shapes and consists of overlapping circles that form a flower-like pattern. It is a reminder that everything is united, originating from the same blueprint. Sacred geometry and mandalas are often used as focus points for meditation and healing.

Artist Statement: Dave Loewenstein is a muralist, printmaker and arts organizer based in Lawrence, Kansas. His community-based murals can be found across the United States, and in Northern Ireland, South Korea and Brazil. Loewenstein's prints, which focus on social justice issues, are exhibited internationally and are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Yale University, and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles. He is the co-author of Kansas Murals: A Traveler's Guide, and is the subject of " Called to Walls," a feature length documentary that premiered in 2016. In 2014, he was named one of the founding Cultural Agents for the new U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, and in 2019 he was named one of the first Interchange fellows (a program supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation) for his project "Between the Rock and a Hard Place."

Artist Statement: I create functional and sculptural works out of porcelain. I am inspired to create for those for who seek a heightened sense of intimacy with the objects that they use every day. By making everyday objects extraordinary, we can build a connection to the act of creating. The medium itself has taught me to be more patient and centered; to stay strong when the world seems unbalanced. I hope that there is a sense of that in my work. The outside of these mugs feature a fern motif. Ferns are a symbol of good fortune, endurance, light and protection in cultures around the globe. It is my hope that these cups will carry these traits with them as they are filled and emptied daily - bringing good fortune and endurance to all who use them.

This set of four cups features food safe glaze. While handwashing will extend the life of the surface, they can be put in the microwave or dishwasher.

Artist Statement: I have always enjoyed working with fabrics, yarn and other fibers. My first fabric project was a basic, simple dress I made when I was 13. Since then, I have experimented with different fiber combinations and techniques. This year's piece, "A Calm Day," is made from fabric, yarn, ribbon lace and other bits and pieces. It is stitched, cut apart, reassembled and stitched again.

Artist Statement: Colby K. Smith received his B.F.A. from Emporia State University and his M.F.A. from Southern University of Illinois at Carbondale. Smith taught at Emporia State and Southern University of Illinois before relocating to Kansas City, Missouri in 2002. In 2003, he opened Gallery HQ, an alternative contemporary art space that occupied locations in the West Bottoms and in the Crossroads Gallery District. In 2004, Smith closed Gallery HQ to dedicate his time and energy to developing Studios Inc., where he formerly served as Director, and to focus on his career as a professional artist. Smith continues to create and exhibit multi-media work that has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the Midwest. In Kansas City, he has exhibited Millennic Glass, The Late Show, Society for Contemporary Photography, and Studios Inc. Exhibition Space. His work was recently featured in the book Glass Art International, and it has been reviewed nationally and regionally in publications, such as Sculpture and Review.

"The choice of a visual language as a means to communicate was an obvious one for me. Years ago, it occurred to me that I could not find words to give form to the ideas and images I wished to express. Since that time, I have pushed my work to reach a point of clarity in which it communicates the inexplicable feelings that pervade my mind, from thoughts of beauty to isolation, to thoughts of comfort."

Artist Statement: When sharing this piece with my mom, who is still undergoing chemotherapy for her battle with breast cancer, I said, "Maybe I should have chosen a different subject. Some of this is just a dirty road." She said, "Sometimes in the country, you go down a dirty road." As soon as she said it, I knew this piece symbolizes the road we wouldn't have chosen, and the wheat stands for my mom's radiant defiance, making and sharing her art, inspiring us all that, in spite of it all, hope grows.

Artist Statement: Alycia is a multidisciplinary artist working in metalsmithing and mixed media works on canvas. Artist Statement: Angie Pickman is a nationally recognized cut paper artist that combines the art of traditional paper cutting with collage to create intricately detailed works of art and animations. Her work is heavily inspired by her love of nature and the tranquility of the terrain of rural Kansas. She has been featured in Martha Stewart Living and Midwest Living magazines, and her animation work premiered on PBS in 2016 in the documentary Daughters of the Forest. She has won numerous awards for her work, including an Independent Music Award for album art.

Artist Statement: Pour paintings are both very process driven and very chaotic, and for the past several years, I have enjoyed the harmony in that juxtaposition. Each piece has a similar, formulaic setup, but a distinct and unpredictable result. The inherent relinquishment of control over the end product is freeing, and my focus can naturally shift from an imagined goal to the process, and I find that my color choices, application technique and the finishing sheen get the attention they deserve and occasionally lack in works of other art styles.

For this piece, I chose to use white, violet and a deep Windsor blue that reminds me of my late mother who passed away last September. She and I bonded over our passion for art, and I feel that the loyal, reassuring coloring of this piece contrasts with its tumultuous imagery in a way that mirrors a complicated mother-daughter relationship.

Artist Statement: From the moment we wake until our heads hit the pillow, we as a society are surrounded by the visual arts. Art is an act of communication that is experienced through the process of creating or by interacting with art as a viewer. My favorite quote on art is from an art and literary critic, Walter Pater: "Art comes to you, proposing frankly, to give nothing but the highest quality to your moments as they pass." The "highest quality to your moments" is so true. My high moments are often while I am making art. For me, Life Drawing is an exercise of energy. So much joy comes from interpreting the surface of the model into light, form and color. The intensity of the act of drawing allows me to be in the moment and immerse myself in the creative process. I hope the viewers of my work also enjoy thoughtful moments as they visit or revisit my work, and they find something in my artwork that speaks to them.

Artist Statement: There have been times in my life where I have found myself with a sense of wanderlust. Feeling like I need to escape the perceived confines of my midwestern upbringing. Thinking that there was so much more out in the world than what I could find around me. As time went on, I found myself observing the beauty and character that has always surrounded me. I just had to look closer. The goal of my photography is to draw attention to the beauty that I see in Topeka, Kansas and the Midwest as a region. Artist Statement: When I met them, I thought the sisters had a very intriguing look. How interesting it would be to go through life with someone who looked like you. Seeing yourself in another person couldn't be clearer. It also made me think of Frida Kahlo's "The Two Fridas," so I decided on a similar pose but with the symbolic natures of shared expansion and contraction of a lifetime in the background with personality differences symbolized in the plants they are holding.

Artist Statement: "DreamTeam" is a collaboration between a wife, who is a painter, and a husband, who is a photographer. Judith loves to paint highly saturated, elegant compositions, and Danny likes to photograph nature. Judith combined two of his photos and altered the colors to create this canvas. This is their love letter to the beauty of Kansas. It is also about how opposites not only attract, but can sometimes team up to create something greater than each could do on their own. Danny documented the adventure, and Judith "painted" a dream about it.

On the Backs of Women

Artist Statement: This piece is about my deep appreciation for mothers, grandmothers and caregivers who, in the US, are mostly all women, all severely undervalued and underpaid, but are the life-force who make it all thrive, who get things done, all with babies on their backs. Their efforts go unseen as though they work in the background, while the rest of us only see the flowers of their labor. Why is it that most child care providers are women in the US? Why is it that they could literally make more money working fast food than they could caring for our children? As a new mom myself, this role has transformed me to my core and given me a closeup view on how vital women are to communities, and also how most lawmakers look nothing like those investing in and tending to the very big needs of small children -- to everyone and everything around them like their garden, beautifying and making the world a better place as a public service as though it is their gift to share. Pure generosity. Can you imagine what they could do if they were each paid what a CEO makes?

I dedicate this piece to our baby's grandmothers, Grandma Kathy and Grandma Linda, who carried us as children quite literally, but also carried us through a childcare drought, who have given us the best gift by cultivating, and nourishing the growth of our baby. This may seem like as simple act, but it is actually most astounding when you really think about it. 90% of brain growth happens before kindergarten. These are the most formative years, the best return on investment. Investing in children is no secret, which is why women are willing to sacrifice, it is where we can make the most impact.

Releasing Trauma Mind

Artist Statement: Before the pandemic, I started going into a deep depression. I didn't reach out to anyone. I have been on this road before, as I had a diagnosis of depression, anxiety and PTSD years previous. I decided I had had enough. I decided to write words on a big canvas in black marker. I wrote down phrases that were opposite of thoughts in my head. I needed to get to another place in my life. I needed to release this trauma in my body. Every day for two years, I looked at a word or phrase and kept adding to it. I realized the more I read a word or a phrase, I felt better in my body reading the words. I have also been working with mirrors (art). In the midst of deciding, I made a big mirror with the words, but had not gotten it out yet. In the midst of figuring it out, Tara Wallace called me asking about an art piece. She said bookends, and I made them. I felt it was right on time. As we continually see what we want, everything changes. The more I see the words, the more I release. Also, my childhood trauma mind is being released, and who I am is coming to the surface to survive and thrive.
