CASA Cultivating Bright Futures Through Post-Secondary Education
CASA is currently expanding services to older youth via our Scholarship program and Scholarship Fund:
The fund was launched at Community Foundation for Monterey County in 2019, galvanized by Devon Mansell, a current CASA volunteer. Currently, the fund is modest (approx. $85,000), and our program is similarly small in scale. The criteria for applying for a scholarship are likewise modest: applicants need to have spent at least one day in foster care in Monterey County, have a GPA of at least 2.0, and must submit an application developed by the Community Foundation for Monterey County, who administers the program on our behalf. To date, we have offered $1000/year to students attending 2-year/Vocational schools and $2000/year to students attending 4-year schools.
Until this year, we received 4-6 applications annually and were able to fund all applicants who met the criteria. However, this year, due to better coordination and outreach with our community partners (MCOE, the Independent Living Program at Hartnell, and CFMC), we received 17 applications. We demonstrated a unique ability to identify and motivate youth in foster care to apply. We want to capitalize on this by growing the fund to support many more youth with life-changing support for post-secondary education.
