SIR MICHAEL VINCENT LEVEY (British, 1927-2008)

Sir Michael Levey served on the staff for 36 years, and ultimately as Director of the National Gallery in London (1973 - 1986), and was one of the most influential figures in the British art world. His detailed, scholarly catalogues, especially of 18th-century Italian Schools and of the German School continue to be indispensable resources. He also catalogued the royal collection of Her Majesty the Queen, first in 1964, then revised in 1991. He wrote numerous books on art, including Six Great Painters (1956), followed by volumes on Bronzino (1967), Botticelli (1974), and Jacob van Ruisdael (1977). He grew up in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
