City Scene by Frederick R. Wagner (1864-1940) pastel, 8.5 x 10 inches, 15 x 16 inches framed. Born in Port Kennedy, PA in 1864, Frederick R. Wagner enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he served as chief demonstrator of anatomy to the life classes and studied under Thomas Eakins. He then traveled to California where he began painting before returning to Philadelphia and taking a job as illustrator for the Philadelphia Press. He often painted impressionist urban scenes and in 1912 founded the Addington School of Painting. His modernist work is sought after by many collectors of the avant-garde movement.
