Figurative painter Dan McCleary's genre scenes of people participating in everyday activities embody stillness, clarity, and wit. Influenced by David Hockney and Italian artists such as Piero della Francesca, Giotto, and Masaccio, McClearly bestows muted devotion to small human activities such as a couple dancing, a waitress refilling a customer's coffee cup, a man weighing himself on a bathroom scale, or a woman giving a customer a manicure. His paintings are devoid of visual disorder and imbued with timelessness. Woman Painting Her Nails (2004) uses pure color and meticulous form to show an intimate look at a woman adorning her nails. He creates his portraits by using friends and acquaintances as life models in his studio. McCleary is the founder and executive director of Art Division, a nonprofit that provides artistic training and career support for underserved youths.
