Meryl Salzinger (b. 1964, New York, NY) grew up in 1970s New York City, where she was somehow moved to find beauty in the grit and grime of her surroundings. After graduating from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in Social Anthropology in 1986, she immersed herself in the craft of photography working with fine printers at the International Center of Photography, Pace University, and the Santa Fe Photo Workshop. Salzinger then entered the world of commercial photography and held a variety of jobs as: Photo Assistant, Producer, Studio Manager, and Baby Wrangler. As her own style developed, she focused less on the correctly printed image and more on manipulating her images so that meaning was distilled in their abstraction. Now, creating sculptural forms with her photographs and using unorthodox surfaces on which to print, it is the physical form and light which communicate meaning, leaving the subject matter as only a vague suggestion.
