Original artwork by Betty Saint Juste, the only woman currently painting in the "Saint-Soleil" school in Haiti. (Betty does not name her artwork; it was named for the MidwivesPAC Auction!)
The Movement Saint-Soleil, the first rural arts community in Haiti, was born in 1973 in Soisson-la-Montagne, in the mountains above Port-au-Prince.
The tradition of Saint Soleil painting lived on in the community. Painters continued with the abstract human forms and the heavy influence of vaudou symbolism.
Today, there are about a dozen artists within a kilometer or two of the museum. Most struggle to find outlets for their art, particularly since the situation in Haiti sharply decreased international travel. This piece was purchased from Betty at her home in the mountains above Port-au-Prince.
