Class One students have been carefully observing the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies in real time. In anticipation of the butterflies that will soon emerge from their chrysalises, children created their own artistic interpretations of butterflies. To make this piece, students worked together to paint a large sheet of paper using oil pastels and watercolors. Then, separately, each student created a collaged butterfly using simple paper shapes and decorative gold paper. When placed together, the paper butterflies take flight, much like how Class One children will soon move onto other classrooms.

Classroom Two's auction art is inspired by the spring season. Friends have been talking about the different types of flowers they have been seeing around the neighborhood, so we thought we would make a large flower with many colorful petals. Each child had the opportunity to paint a rectangular piece of card stock with watercolors. Bright colors such as red, yellow, orange, blue, purple, and green were used to create a spring-like feel to the piece. Once the children's beautifully painted card stock was dry, we cut the paintings into flower petals. We arranged the flower by surrounding a medium-sized yellow circle with purple petals. The remaining multi-colored petals are arranged to look as if they are growing out of the main flower towards the edge of the piece. The entire work of art is glued to a large piece of black pasteboard and placed in a white frame. It truly captures the spring season!

How it tastes: A wonderfully dark amber in color, the nose here features a surprisingly slight profile - a little wood and vanilla, not much else. On the palate, however, it's a spicy, honeyed explosion with some subtle notes of dark chocolate and dark fruit. And yet, that spice dissipates quickly and pleasantly on the finish. It's hard to go from subtle to bold to smooth, but this is a rye that deftly straddles all those lines.

In Class 3 we perform plays every Friday of familiar books and stories such as The Three Little Pigs, Abiyoyo, The Very Busy Spider and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Once the children become familiar with how a play works many love to write their own stories and plays. This year we decided to work together as a class to write our own play, a spin off on Goldilocks and the Three Bears called The Three Bears and Goldilocks. We worked together over the course of several meetings to craft and workshop the play.

After our play was perfected, we worked together to illustrate it over several story panels. Teachers did the background and children drew the different bears and other characters. Children worked hard to add details and expressions to the characters. They looked at pictures of real bears, noticed their different features and added them to their drawings. We put the story panels together to create a beautiful illustration of our play.

Classroom Four friends have been exploring many mediums of art this year. In this piece, friends traced various shapes such as circles, ovals, rectangles, and octagons. They then cut out these shapes out and used oil pastels to color them. Each friend worked on blending skills to make their shapes full of color. The friends then collaboratively placed the shapes together on a canvas to create a collage. The art piece showcases all of the art skills that they have been working on including tracing, cutting, gluing, collage making, and using oil pastels.

The Whisky:

The "happy accident" that led to this whisky was Ardbeg's boilers breaking down. Instead of throwing out the mash until those were fixed, Dr. Bill Lumsden (the mad-scientist distiller behind Ardbeg) decided to see what would happen if they let it be. The washback lids were opened and the mash was allowed to ferment with the sea-kissed Islay air for three more weeks. To put that in perspective, Ardbeg (and most whiskies) usually ferment for 72 hours before distillation.

Once the boilers were back up and running, the whisky was distilled and then barreled in first-fill and re-fill bourbon casks. 13 years later, Dr. Bill decided it was ready and here we are.

Tasting Notes:

This. Is. Wild. The nose starts off with this burst of fresh green grass just after the rain that melts into a summer herb garden (mint heavy), grapefruit seeds, and smoked butter with sweet lemon candy and orange trees that's underpinned with a dark and rich soil that's been turned with manure. Going deeper on the nose, you get fresh tires, mossy fir bark, and maybe a hint of fennel-heavy focaccia.
