0Danylo Turetsky, 'Christ Emmanuel' Acrylic, levkas, on wood board, 50 x 30.5 cm Made in Lviv, Ukraine This Byzantine-style icon of the Christ-child, Emmanuel (which means "God with us"), was written by Danylo Turetsky, a second-generation iconographer from the city of Lviv in western Ukraine. In one of his most notable projects, Danylo worked together with his father Bohdan to produce the icon screen (iconostasis) for Kyiv's Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the central cathedral of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Icons are stylized depictions of holy people meant to draw us into further contemplation of the mysteries of Christian faith, and this one is an exemplar of that function. In this vein, we reproduce the words of Dr. Valentyn Tykhonenko, director-general of the VATT expert consulting and training center in Kyiv, who, viewing this icon at exhibition, remarked, "Take, say, Turetsky's painting Emmanuel, and you will see it is alive. Look at Jesus' eyes - they are full of life." We hope that this icon can become a source of blessing for your home and a striking reminder of the priceless gifts of freedom and life that come from Jesus.
