Originally from Chicago, Hiles spent many years as a pediatric eye surgeon, professor and researcher. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Wickenburg, Arizona and he joined the Scottsdale Gem and Mineral Society.
"That's when I became fascinated with rocks," he says.

Now, instead of doing micro-surgery on faces and heads, he does dusty macro-surgery on boulders.

Hiles enjoys travelling, which affords him an opportunity to find different sources of stone for his free-form abstract creations. He lets purchasers title their own pieces.

His piece in the Fountain Hills Public Art collection, "Embrace", is located on the east side of the Community Center plaza.
His untitled piece in this auction is made from Indiana limestone.

Dimensions are 13"x13" and 24" tall.
