John Battle first created a "plate" for The Retreat in 2002. Each year he has created a unique interpretation of a plate using the medium of iron.

This year's creation is 12" in diameter and 12" in height, resting on three metal feet.

With a degree in visual studies and architecture from Dartmouth College, Battle began working in his Boston studio for four years showing his sculptures at The Helen Shlien Gallery on Congress Street.

In 1979 he moved to New York City and maintained a studio on 29th street for six years moving his focus to the study of blacksmithing techniques and metal craftsmanship. He continued sculpting but began accepting decorative metal commissions. Two wrought iron gallery doorways from this period can be seen installed at The Hispanic Society of America in NYC.

In 1985 he moved to Bridgehampton NY where he has been a custom metalsmith and restorer of historic landmarks at Battle Iron & Bronze LLC ever since.

He restored and rebuilt The Sag Harbor Cinema sign.
