ARTIST BIO

I consider myself primarily anobservational painter, painting mostly fromlife, and often outside 'en plein air'. Paintingin one session, "Alla prima" keeps the surfacefresh. I like to look for interestingcompositions and often don't know what I willchoose to paint until I get to a location.Sometimes what attracts me is simply a lighteffect and, though my work isrepresentational, it is often the abstractpatterns of shadows that get me started. Ipaint a vast range of subjects, and amalways looking for a new challenge.Julie Riker is a native of central Pennsylvania and a graduate of the University of theArts. She has worked as a decorator in the historic restoration of the PA State Capitol, where she was involved for five years replicating original decorative painting, stencilingand applying gold leaf and ornamental plaster finishes. In 1996 Julie started her owndecorative painting business creating artwork for individual homes and businesses.Working out of her Camp Hill studio she specializes in custom art, decorative painting, murals and faux finishes for walls and furniture. She has travelled from New York toFlorida for commissioned projects, and has even created and painted wall finishes forthe PA Governor's residence in 2002.When not working for a client, Julie enjoys painting outdoors.Often these plein airpaintings serve as inspiration for larger studio pieces, but some stand on their own asobservations of the beauty and variety of nature. She has participated in many nationalplein air events and won several awards.Recent accomplishmentsare First Place at PaintAnnapolis, Artist's Choice Award at Paint Snow Hill, People's Choice Award for QuickDraw at Finger Lakes Plein Air, Plein Air Magazine Award at the Wayne Plein AirFestival, Plein Air Salon Finalist, and Feature Artist juried into Plein Air Easton. Herwork is featured in the Feb/March 2018 issue of Plein Air Magazine and she wasrecognized as an "Artist to Watch" in Southwest Art Magazine's October 2018 issue.
