Red Schooner by Caymus Voyage 10 (Malbec)
2019 Caymus-Suisin Grand Durif (aka Peite Sirah)
Some of y'all may have heard of Caymus Vineyards. They make a well-known Cabernet Sauvignon out of some place called Napa Valley, although they have expanded a bit in recent years.
The Suisin Valley is one mountain range to the east of Napa and winemakers from all over that area know of the terrific grapes that are grown there. Durif (Petite Sirah) can produce some dark, tannic and acidic wines if you aren't careful, but if you are, you'll get a wine that is big, bold and tooth-staining with flavors of black plum and black pepper. On the right day, Durif can make a Cabernet Sauvignon feel like a deflated balloon.
This items voyage veers to South America, where the folks at Caymus are trying something unusual. They are growing Malbec high in the Andes and when it's ready, are shipping it back their facilities in the good 'ol USA for pressing, vinifying, aging and bottling. Voyage 10 is the 2020 edition of this wine. You'll expect the typical Malbec niceties with this wine; bigness, dark fruit, nice tannin.
