The George Heilmeier Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
We are honored to present Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson with the George Heilmeier Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award. This award, in representation of George Heilmeier, exemplifies an individual with outstanding civil and charitable responsibility; a person whose life unfortunately intersected with Alzheimer's and other related dementia. The life of George Heilmeier was characterized by his unwavering love for science, family and community.
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson is serving her 15th term representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas. Congresswoman Johnson is the first African-American and woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and is the Dean of the Texas Congressional delegation in addition to serving as Dean of the Texas, New Mexico and Arizona Democratic Congressional Delegation. Congresswoman Johnson is the highest-ranking Texan on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the first nurse to be elected to the U.S. Congress.
Congresswoman Johnson began her career as the first female African-American Chief Psychiatric Nurse at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas. In 1972, she became the first nurse ever elected to the Texas State House and achieved that same distinction upon her election to the Texas Senate in 1986. From 2011 to 2018, she served as the Science, Space and Technology Committee's first African-American and first female Ranking Member.
Congresswoman Johnson has a reputation as a stateswoman who works with both parties to get things done - a reputation earned during her more than 40 years in public office. Congresswoman Johnson is widely recognized as one of the most effective legislators in Congress, credited with authoring and co-authoring more than 177 bills that were passed by the House and Senate and signed into law by the president. She has a long-standing reputation for providing excellent constituent services to the people who elected her. She is the founder of the Diversity & Innovation Caucus, the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Homelessness Caucus, co-chair of the Congressional Lupus Caucus, and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus of Bosnia. Congresswoman Johnson had the honor to serve as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus during the 107th Congress. Her acclaimed initiative, A World of Women for World Peace, has gained national and international recognition.
Congresswoman Johnson was previously a member of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's, and is currently cosponsoring 2 pieces of legislation including the Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Act.
Honorary Chairs
James and Mary Jo Cochrum
Sam and Jennifer Petty
The Cochrum and Petty families began their relationship with the Alzheimer's Association a decade ago when a dear friend and business partner, Jeff Rushing, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 58. The Association quickly became a trusted resource, and Team Rushing for the Cure was formed to raise funds and participate in the Dallas Walk to End Alzheimer's on Jeff's behalf. Since that first walk, the relationship with the Alzheimer's Association has continued to grow. As Co-Presidents of Venture Mechanical, Inc., the pathway that James and Sam helped carve out for Jeff as he retired due to his illness later sparked the inception of the Alzheimer's Association resource "Why Employers Should Care". Jeff lost his life to Alzheimer's earlier this year, and Sam and James serve as Honorary Chairs for this year's gala in memory of their friend who never missed an opportunity to talk to people about his disease and raise awareness, even as his own health failed.
Sam and his wife Jennifer share another personal connection to the fight against Alzheimer's, as Jennifer's mother was diagnosed with the disease in 2013. They are excited to be a part of this moment to raise awareness and support for this disease that has touched them personally on many levels. The Pettys reside in Arlington and travel frequently, spending time with their two children and twin grandsons as often as possible.
James and his wife Mary Jo spend much of their free time in service to their home church, Woodland West Church of Christ. Mary Jo is a licensed professional counselor and has a thriving counseling practice, Woodland West Christian Counseling. The Cochrums live in Arlington and also enjoy spending time with their three children and eight grandchildren.
James and Sam are the second generation managing partners of Venture Mechanical, Inc., a premier mechanical contractor in Texas that has been in business since 1975. They, along with their families and Venture Mechanical, are actively involved with several other philanthropic entities including the Arlington Life Shelter, Fortress Youth Development Center, and NewDay Services. The Cochrums and the Pettys are grateful for the impact that the Dallas and Northeast Texas Alzheimer's Association has made in the lives of those they love, and are humbled to be the Honorary Chairs for this year's Gala.
