Akron became a commercial hub after the opening of the Ohio & Erie Canal in 1827. Even after railroads superseded the canal, it continued to play a role in transport of raw materials. Although a disastrous storm in 1911 destroyed the locks, closing the canal, power from the waterwheels was surreptitiously used during Prohibition to distill spirits. Seeing opportunity, Rocco "Roxy" Piscazzi and his associates created a network of distilling and distribution throughout Akron and the surrounding area. Rocco became one of the most successful bootleggers in town. Anthony Piscazzi , the great-grandson of Rocco, is owner of The Merchant Tavern'; he has opened Towpath Distillery, bringing back family traditions by using old recipes and new world techniques to produce high quality spirits. Towpath distillery is a legal continuation of a family legacy. Show your support for Akron's very own, with a collection of Towpath Distillery merchandise. Package includes a Towpath Distillery hat, hoodie, and t-shirt.
