Founded in 1852 and now in its fifth generation of family ownership, the Atelier Mourlot first produced wallpaper before becoming one of the world's leading print studios, specializing in lithography. The studio established its fine art credentials by working with artists including Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Joan MirĂ³, and Henri Matisse-the latter designed the image that graces this lithographic poster, using the paper cutout method that he favored late in his career. Matisse originally created the image for a 1952 exhibition celebrating Atelier Mourlot's centenary, and the studio faithfully reproduced the composition in this version for a similar show in Tokyo at the Art Museum of the Seibu Department Stores in 1984.
