If I Could Speak I Would Tell You

Artist Statement

"To sleep-perchance to dream" (HAMLET William Shakespeare). Hamlet was pondering death at the opening of his soliloquy. For me, I prefer to have interesting visions. At bedtime I try emptying my mind of worry by reading or looking at the works of an artist I admire, or read a poem and try to memorize some part of it, or read a good travel book written by an author who has dug deep into the experience of place such as Lawrence Durrell or Freya Stark.

"If I Could Speak I Would Tell You" relates to how I came upon a dance performance where the back of the theater opened up. A man tried to explain what was happening, but I could not hear the words. In dreaming, sometimes a missing piece to some waking problem is revealed, very often it feeds my art making, but even more often it leaves me struggling to remember where I've been and what I've seen. Through art we can take these fleeting impressions and make something with them.
