The Friends of Villa Terrace Gala in the Garden on Saturday, July 23rd will be a wonderful evening of cocktails, wine-tasting, dining and dancing! We are so looking forward to holding a fun event that will be mostly outside, where we can all gather and enjoy a lovely summer night in the beautiful Renaissance Gardens of Villa Terrace! This will be a party that you don't want to miss!

I can't tell you how many people have said they truly love Villa Terrace and its splendid Renaissance Garden. Many couples have fond memories of their wedding held in such a gorgeous location. I've just become president of the Friends of Villa Terrace board, and look forward to helping the organization thrive and succeed, but I'd love your help.

The Gala occurs every other year and raises the money necessary to take care of the Renaissance Garden for two years. We had to postpone last year's event due to COVID, so we have had to stretch our budget to cover three years of costs. At the same time, our budget for garden maintenance next year has increased significantly due to increased costs as well as some pruning and replanting projects that are overdue. The Garden Committee does an amazing job and tells us that these projects just can't be put off any longer. We need to raise $150,000 to cover these next two years of garden maintenance, so that everyone can enjoy the beauty and serenity of these lovely gardens. 

At the same time, the beautiful marble Hermes sculpture in the courtyard is facing an imminent threat. This sculpture is a true hidden gem in Milwaukee. It is comprised of a 1st c. Roman torso and 17th c. Italian additions, attributed to that most famous of sculptors, Bernini. This is a very important part of Milwaukee's cultural heritage! Years of being outdoors and the fact that it has interior iron rods that are decaying is causing the sculpture to slowly degrade. In fact, a piece of the base came off while a conservator was examining the sculpture recently! We have two very generous donors, Margarete Harvey and Susan Strecker, who have each offered to provide a $15,000 challenge grant at the Gala to raise funds for the sculpture's conservation, which will provide a significant part of the funds needed by the Charles Allis Villa Terrace Museums to conserve the sculpture so that it can be enjoyed by future generations. 

We would so appreciate anything you can do to make a contribution to the Gala, and help us raise money to cover garden maintenance and the conservation of the Hermes sculpture!
