About the Artist:

James ("Jimmy") Haverty Smith is an Atlanta-based artist and architect. He received the "Member's Choice" Award at the 2021 Beaux Arts Festival for his painting "A Midsummer Night". He has recently completed a course of study in oil painting and pastels with renowned artist Albert Handell.

Jimmy's life as a visual artist spans more than four decades. He received his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He studied at the Hambidge Center and received a fellowship at the Genesis Project on Ossabaw Island.

Jimmy received a Masters in Architecture from Harvard's Graduate School of Design, graduating with highest honors and earning the top design award. He spent the majority of his architectural career as Design Principal in the Atlanta office of Perkins and Will, one of the largest architectural design firms in the world. Jimmy won numerous design awards while at Perkins and Will, and recently served as Design Director in the Dubai, UAE and Amman, Jordan offices. He moved back to Atlanta in 2019 and retired in 2020 to focus more fully on his passion for painting and watercolor.

James is married to Mary Anne Walser, a lawyer and Realtor, and has three children and five grandchildren. His three children have each also pursued careers in the arts, following in the footsteps of their father.
