Big Dreams, Small Fish is the story of Shirley, a little girl in the 1930's whose family lives above their shop in an immigrant neighborhood. Her family tells her "we didn't come to this country for you to work" but Shirley has big dreams for their store. She plans to make it prettier, more modern, and more profitable. Maybe she will even help sell Mama's slow selling gefilte fish and introduce a new flavor into the neighborhood!

Paula Cohen is an author/illustrator with a long career as an editorial illustrator. A few years ago she decided to focus on children's books and she's very glad she did. Her debut picture book, Big Dreams, Small Fish (Levine Querido) will be out in March, 2022. She is the illustrator of Honey On The Page: A Treasury of Yiddish Children's Literature (Miriam Udel/NYU Press, 2020) and The Incredible Shrinking Lunchroom (Michal Babay/Charlesbridge, 2022.). Her work has also appeared in Honeycake Magazine, Black Enterprise Magazine, Scholastic Magazine, the Boston Globe, and more.
Paula lives in New Jersey with her family and cantankerous miniature schnauzer. She writes stories about all kinds of things but is often drawn to dogs, polar bears, and food!
