THE GOSPA VILLAGE STORY
For so many people in Buffalo, New York times are hard. We are seeing more displaced families and more homeless single mothers and children in crisis.
On August 1, 1994, Amy Betros and Norm Paolini were led by God to purchase the school, church, convent and rectory of St. Luke's Parish on the East Side of Buffalo. Since that time, Norm and Amy, along with eleven Missionaries and countless volunteers offer love and hope in concrete ways to all those who come to them in need.
It is with this in mind, and because there is still so much need for adequate shelter for many women and children on the streets, that Gospa Village Project was born.
The Gospa Village will provide shelter for single mothers and their children. It is a faith centered community whose goal is to provide a safe, wholesome, family environment for mothers and their children while they obtain the skills necessary for independence. Each family will be involved in a program that responds to their unique situation within the framework of faith, family and education. The goal is to seek and preserve the utmost respect for the family as the fundamental unit of society, all while offering support freely, in mercy and without judgement.
Official ground breaking took place on Friday, November 15, 2013 at the corner of Sycamore and Oberlin adjacent to St. Luke's Mission of Mercy. This exciting day signified new growth and hope for a better future for the Lower East Side of Buffalo.
Many generous companies have stepped up through the years to offer pro bono services towards the project; Lehigh Construction, Advanced Design Group, Buffalo Geothermal, Chicago Title Insurance Company, Phillips Lytle, LLP, Scheid Architectural, PLLC, and Solarliberty. In addition, countless numbers of sponsors, advertisers and donors have committed monetarily in supporting the many efforts necessary to build this village.
Since fundraising began in October 2006 Gospa Village Inc. has purchased the site from the City of Buffalo and has successfully completed construction of 6 of the twelve proposed homes. Due to covid it was necessary to cancel annual fundraising galas in 2020 and 2021. However, an online silent auction is scheduled in October 2021 to raise the funds needed begin construction of house #7.
