Until December 2018, I was a scientist with the CDC. After 27 years of working as a laboratory chemist and later as a field epidemiologist, I was offered early retirement, and have now devoted myself to being a full-time artist. A very large part of the reason for my early retirement is that I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2010. After the worst of the chemo, I converted my home office into an art studio and vowed to spend my evenings doing art, not calculations. When the possibility of an early retirement was offered to me, I took the chance at a second career. My work is largely playful and positive because the world can be a dark and scary place at times. But staying focused on the positive and keeping hope for the future can carry us through.
