Tiny Iron Brooch

Created in the Metal Museums Foundry Invitational and River Exhibition Tiny Iron Workshop Taught by Alison Ouellette-Kirby.

Tiny strips of wax were rolled and connected to create the shape. The wax brooch was then dipped in ceramic shell to create the mold. The wax was melted out of the mold. A tiny amount of iron was melted using an acetylene torch and the melted iron was "slung" into the mold by using the centrifugal caster.

About the Artist

Jeannie Tomlinson Saltmarsh has over 20 years of connections to the artists and educators that have traveled through the gates of the Metal Museum in Memphis, TN. Although exposed to many techniques offered in the Metals Studios, her primary focus has been foundry processes.

"What I love most is to brainstorm ideas with the Metal Museum staff, get all their informed ideas on how they would approach my project. Then I get to choose what makes the most sense to me. I try not to overthink it and hit the ground running with what makes the most sense to me in the moment. Then I learn from the results and (sometimes) do it again. I usually go back and tell one of them they were right, but sometimes a unique process is developed and I'm most proud of that collaboration and its results."

Shipping Information

Shipping costs are calculated at the end of the auction. Fees are determined by size and weight of items. Keep in mind that large or heavy items will incur higher shipping fees. Alternately, items may be picked up in person at the Metal Museum.
