About the Artist

Dolph Smith is a longtime educator, painter, and bookmaker. Dolph taught for many years at the Memphis College of Art (MCA) before his retirement in 1995. He holds an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from MCA. In 2011, he received Tennessee's highest honor in the arts, the Governor's Arts Award in the Distinguished Artist Award category. He now lives in Ripley, TN where he calls his home Tennarkippi. Dolph has also been recognized as a Director Emeritus at the Metal Museum.

About the Item

This bowl was made using cast iron with a flocked interior and a forged steel base, the bowl can sit and wobble or float on a surface without the base or be placed in the dimpled base for a more anchored presentation.

About the Artist

James Vanderpool joined the Metal Museum team in 2014 as the Foundry Operations Manager. Vanderpool came to Memphis by way of Lexington, KY, where he taught studio art at The University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University. Vanderpool holds his MFA in sculpture from Georgia State University, where he specialized in foundry and woodworking. His personal practice focuses on industrial objects and topography.

Baldridge is a 29 year old blacksmith working out of central Arkansas. His first exposure to the craft was at Old Washington State Park where he took a one day class in the historic forge that James Black made the first Bowie knife, and he has been hooked ever since! Coyne took a 1/2 inch bolt and forge the head into a flower, using the nut as a base. In this particular style the petals are forged from the front and the back to create an interesting petal design.

Coyne began as an industrial artist. Experience and skill with metal greatly influences her art. She is trained as a blacksmith to shape steel into tools and connections that will serve an efficient end. Coyne has made a name for herself in the blacksmithing community by forging forms that contradict the weight of the material and the prudential practice of the craft. The strength of steel offers her the opportunity to experiment with balance and asymmetry. Its versatility provides the ability to create surprising forms. She has always been fascinated by the idea that the shape of something can create an emotion in people. Coyne can follow the vein of iron and carbon. She can take it to a place of function, to a gate, a tool, a joint. Or she can follow it where it wants to go. Or she can do both. This is what Coyne is trying to do. Let the metal move. Getting away from politics and concerning himself with lighter subjects. Harrell wanted to spread joy with flowers that would never die, so using copper, some scrap, and recycling old tins and glass he created these fun little sculpture to bring joy.

About the Artist

Stephanie Savic Polk received a BFA from Denison University and a MFA in sculpture from Washington University, Sam Fox School of Design in St. Louis, Mo. In her career she has moved through a multitude of scales ranging from urban installations to small elements for the body. In the last two decades she has been mostly focused on intimate work incorporating handmade glass, enamels, precious metals and stones through metalsmithing technics. The human figure has always been a feature in her work and through elements that adorn the body; material, weight, scale, shape and technique are explored.

Stephanie has exhibited throughout the Southeast and Midwest. She has received several fellowships from the Florida Society of Goldsmiths and was an Artist in Residence at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis from June 2010 to June 2011. She has also taught in several institutions both for adults and children, most recently at the NOMM, May 2016 as well as two Teaching Assistantships for North Country Studio Workshops in Bennington, VT in Jan. 2018 and Jan. 2020. Exhibitions in Memphis, TN, include QUEEN FOR A DAY, at Overton Park Gallery, Nov., 2014 and INCHES FROM THE EARTH, at the National Ornamental Metal Museum, March 2016 and The Art of Serving at Diane's Art Gift Home, November 2017. More recently outside of Memphis she had a solo exhibition at 529 N Dawson in Thomasville, GA, November 2019.

About the Item

The "scrap gate" as it is known is a long-standing tradition in the Metals Studio. Local artist Dolph Smith and the second-year apprentice will jointly design and fabricate a gate or yard sculpture using scrap material from the blacksmith shop. This gate, created in 2016, was a collaborative effort between Dolph Smith and Ann Klicka.

About the Artists

Ann Klicka received her BFA in Sculpture from the Hartford Art School, CT. In addition to completing an apprenticeship at the Metal Museum, she has studied blacksmithing and metalworking techniques with masters across the United States. She has studied and taught at several schools including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Penland School of Crafts, the John C. Campbell Folk School, and the Peters Valley Craft school.

About the Artist

Richard Mawdsley, born in Winfield, Kansas, is a metal artist specializing in intricate fabricated work using tubing, and is currently working with carved vessels using CNC machining technology. He is Professor Emeritus at Southern Illinois University School of Art and Design, having retired in 2004. Including a previous faculty position at Illinois State University, he taught at the university level for a total of 36 years. Before completing a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Kansas, he received an undergraduate degree from Emporia State University, Kansas, in 1967.

Cassi Rebman is a sculptor and installation artist from Belle Plaine, MN. She is an MFA candidate at Hays University (Hays, KS), received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (Minneapolis, MN), is an alumna of Franconia Sculpture Park (Schafer, MN), and is a former Foundry Apprentice at the Metal Museum. As an artist, her work responds to the question - "What are we capable of, and what might be holding us back?" This small metal sculpture entitled "Presence of Absence" suggests the consequences of repeated actions against our forests through deforestation. The bird feet are a quiet symbol which represents the loss of habitat. The sculpture is cast pewter with mounting bracket included for wall display.

Cozette Phillips earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from The State University of New York in Metals and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Illustration from The Columbus College of Art and Design. Artist residencies and research include The School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in Trondheim, Norway, Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX, and the Metal Museum in Memphis, TN. A practicing artist, she exhibits sculpture in national and international venues maintaining a studio in Spokane, WA. Presently, Cozette is a Curator for the State of Washington Permanent Arts Collection and Gallery Director for SFCC Fine Arts Gallery. About the Item

Cridler's work references patterns and cycles in the natural world, employing symbolic forms like vessels and trees, suggesting our desire to collect and contain. This series explores interdependency. We often think of ourselves as apart from the world, yet we are of this very nature that we are changing. In the Remain series, the vessel grows around and through sections of trees, rather than the pattern of nature accomodating our presence. A hopeful speculation, reframing our relation with nature as relation rather than mere resource.

About the Artist

Trained as a metalsmith, Cridler was an undergrad at the University of Michigan and earned an MFA in Metals from the SUNY New Paltz. She has applied my use of steel, structure and ornament in large-scale art projects and commissions as well as maintaining a studio practice. Physically and conceptually Cridler appreciates how the modest and repetitive tasks that comprise a life can be both transformative and generative.
