About the Item

Years ago JG Braun donated some of their stamped mild steel leaf samples to the Museum. When some of these specimens were deaccessed from the collection, Clemons thought they would make interesting forms to respond to in the creation of a piece of jewelry. The resulting brooch includes some of the steel leaves combined with sterling silver and bone.

About the Artist

Clemons completed a painting BFA at the University of Texas in Austin. He earned his MFA in Metalsmithing in 2007 from San Diego State University. Clemons was fortunate to have the opportunity to developed and head the Metalsmithing and Jewelry Department at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Arkansas for 8 years. His work embraces Metalsmithing's collected history of techniques and objects. The resulting works in metal and mixed media are vehicles to communicate ideas surrounding identity and forays into material and process-based work.

About the Item

The stone on this item was salvaged from a building on Front Street in Memphis, Tennessee. The iron came from the structural skeleton of Ellis Auditorium, also in Memphis.

About the Artist

Richard Carr is an inspired craftsman with over forty years in an industrial setting. His love of old architecture and organic forms can be seen in his work. He likes to use salvaged material in his work. The renewal of downtown Memphis has allowed him to salvage stone, iron, and wood. These aged and textured materials are the backbone of his work.

About the Artist

Originally from Springfield, MO, Kevin Burge has lived in Memphis since 2007, when he began work at the Metal Museum. Burge holds a BFA in Metals and Jewelry from Missouri State University. His work includes vessels and jewelry, and has been featured in exhibitions at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, ArtsMemphis, Christian Brothers University, and Missouri State University.

About the Item

The earrings are fabricated from 18k gold with a Uvarovite Garnet. The beautiful garnet is set in a classical bezel with minimal accents to show off the dramatic look of the stone.

About the Artist

Jaudés draws from a wide range of metals and finishes to create the unique look and feel of each piece. She use traditional Metalsmithing methods, such as: Fabrication, forming, fold forming and lost wax casting, just to name a few. The various metal combinations influence and inform the overall design and the patinas create a detailed surface. She often use Prisma color pencils which allows her to incorporate her love for rendering, as well as achieve a distinctive look and surface of the work.

About the Item

This small metal sculpture entitled "Presence of Absence" suggests the consequences of repeated actions against our forests through deforestation. The bird feet are a quiet symbol which represents the loss of habitat. The sculpture is cast pewter with mounting bracket included for wall display.

About the Artist

Cozette Phillips earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from The State University of New York in Metals and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Illustration from The Columbus College of Art and Design. Artist residencies and research include The School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in Trondheim, Norway, Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX, and the Metal Museum in Memphis, TN. A practicing artist, she exhibits sculpture in national and international venues maintaining a studio in Spokane, WA. Presently, Cozette is a Curator for the State of Washington Permanent Arts Collection and Gallery Director for SFCC Fine Arts Gallery. Her artwork is in both public and private collections including the Michigan Legacy Art Park, the Metal Museum in Memphis, TN, and on permanent display at Okayakohan Public Park in Okaya, Japan.

About the Artist

Richard Prillaman has been a prominent part of the metals community in Memphis. He was head of the metals department at Memphis College of Art and was awarded Faculty Emeritus after his retirement. This year's Repair Days Commemorative Light Switch Plate is designed by Foundry Apprentice Savannah Smith and cast in aluminum in the Museum's Foundry. Featuring two birds in flight and boughs with hanging berries, this design is based on work by this year's Master Metalsmith, Kim Cridler.

About the Artist

James Viste was raised on a farm in Wisconsin. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a master of fine art degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He is a nationally known blacksmithing demonstrator and exhibitor and has participated in several national Ironwork Restoration Projects, including at Cranbrook Educational Community, The Charles Lang Freer House and The Detroit Institute of Arts. He has worked for studios in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Mexico and Michigan. He is currently the Manager of Edgewise Forge LLC in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

About the Artist

Pat Flynn is a goldsmith who lives and works in High Falls, New York. His iconic nail bracelets combine blackened iron with 22 karat and 18 karat yellow gold, 18 karat palladium white gold, diamonds and pearls. His larger cuff bracelets incorporate hinges and box clasps that not only suit functionality for the wearer, but display meticulous craftsmanship.

Each piece of jewelry is hand forged by Pat, often times incorporating fused 22 karat gold onto the iron. Pat is a master of subtle texture, working the surface with varying tools from the hammer and graver, to etching and filing. This attention to detail, technical control, and combination of disparate materials creates unparalleled elegance in his jewelry.

Pat's work has been featured in Metalsmith magazine and, most recently included in the Penland Book of Jewelry. His work can also be found in the collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Art & Design in New York. His work has most recently been acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.

Sarah Perkins was the 2019 Master Metalsmith at the Metal Museum. She has shown artwork in the United States, India, Canada, Europe, Korea, and Taiwan, participating in over 300 competitive and invitational exhibitions. Since it is difficult to granulate in specific shapes or open patterns on domed surfaces, Dory cuts paths in the surface with a CNC mill. This opens up new design possibilities as he continues to explore possibilities in stainless granulation.

About the Artist

Ben Dory is an artist and metalsmith originally from Kansas City, KS. Dory received his BFA in Metalsmithing/Jewelry from the University of Kansas and his MFA in Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2014. While maintaining his studio practice, Ben explored various disciplines in the arts, including technician work, product design, nonprofit programming, collegiate teaching, and workshop instruction. Ben currently works out of his studio in Savannah, GA.

About the Item

Cridler's work references patterns and cycles in the natural world, employing symbolic forms like vessels and trees, suggesting our desire to collect and contain. This series explores interdependency. We often think of ourselves as apart from the world, yet we are of this very nature that we are changing. In the Remain series, the vessel grows around and through sections of trees, rather than the pattern of nature accomodating our presence. A hopeful speculation, reframing our relation with nature as relation rather than mere resource.

About the Artist

Trained as a metalsmith, Cridler was an undergrad at the University of Michigan and earned an MFA in Metals from the SUNY New Paltz. She has applied my use of steel, structure and ornament in large-scale art projects and commissions as well as maintaining a studio practice. Physically and conceptually Cridler appreciates how the modest and repetitive tasks that comprise a life can be both transformative and generative.
