Tom Toro is a New Yorker cartoonist and author. His books include How to Potty Train Your Porcupine (Little, Brown), A User's Guide to Democracy (Celadon), and Tiny Hands (Dock Street Press). Tom recently illustrated Simon Rich's debut children's picture book I'm Terrified of Bath Time (Little, Brown), which is coming out this spring. He has published hundreds of cartoons in the New Yorker, where they've been a beloved feature since 2010, and his cartoons also appear in Playboy, the Paris Review, the New York Times, Wired, and elsewhere. Tom was a finalist for the 2019 National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award for gag cartoonist of the year. He is currently developing a syndicated comic strip with Andrews McMeel Universal. Through his speaker's bureau, Tom gives presentations on cartooning across the country and abroad, including at Columbia University, the Kansas City Art Institute, Litquake San Francisco, and Day of Knowledge in Mexico City. Tom graduated cum laude from Yale, where he was a cartoonist and cartoon editor for the Yale Herald. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, kid and cat.
