On June 4, 2022, forty of Queen Elizabeth II's jockeys past and present lined up in a spectacular guard of honour for the royal party, before racing on Derby Day at Epsom, in England.

The greats of the saddle, dressed in the famous purple and gold silks, lined up on the steps overlooking the hat-box winner's enclosure before heading onto the track to greet the Princess Royal and other members of the entourage to commemorate the jubilee.

The queen was unable to attend due to ill-health.

Steve Cauthen, who won the Derby three times and was a regular in the queen's silks in the 1980s, flew in from Kentucky to be part of the parade.

"It was an honour to be invited over here for the queen's platinum jubilee celebrations," he said.

"I've been looking forward to this ever since I received the invite. It is such a thrill to be here with all these great jockeys. It was always an honour to ride for the queen and to celebrate her in this way is wonderful."

Seen as the "Alpha" or "leader" of the New Day herd, 29-year-old thoroughbred Cash never really has to be bossy; the other horses just seem to know they can trust him and that he will be respectful.

Cash takes his responsibilities to his herd and his clients very seriously. The New Day team can see him stepping up or slowing down based on who he is serving in the moment. Cash is getting up there in years, but he is still very smart; he simply appreciates a slower, less strenuous workload.

Cash loves a warm, cozy stall with lots of green hay and a few water buckets for him to use for dipping the hay. He prefers the indoors so much that if he's outside and wants in, he'll stand by the gate and stomp until he gets his way. :)

Chip, short for Chippewa, is a 24-year-old Quarter Horse who is just a bit larger than a pony. Chip's pleasant personality, size, and general disposition keeps him in high demand as we match clients to our horses. Chip is everyone's friend and a favorite of many of our clients.

Chip has a difficult time standing still for long periods, so he's great at teaching clients that it's okay to learn and move at the same time.

Chip takes a daily medication for joint pain, and his favorite treat is strawberry Pop-Tarts!

Coal, our 7-year-old Hackney Pony, is the youngest and smallest of our crew. He's also one of the newest residents of New Day Ranch, only coming to us a year ago.

Coal is best friends with JT and loves to play halter tag with him. And, even though he's "broke" in riding, he can also pull a cart!

Daisy Mae is actually a full-size donkey who was rescued by the New Day Ranch team about 4 years ago. Daisy Mae was a companion horse to a quarter horse named JT, so it was a package deal.

These days, Daisy spends most of her time with Darby - they are so in love! Darby even shares his mush (a special meal he requires) with Daisy... now that's love. ;)

Fun fact: Our host for this evening, Steve Cauthen, LOVES donkeys - so we almost let her go to live at his farm! But the New Day team fell in love with her and her ears, which she loves for you to scratch as you talk sweet to her.

Daisy Mae loves to be loved on, so she is a great partner for our younger clients who have severe anxiety. She is also protector of the horses, braying an alert if any of the animals seem to be in danger.

As an older donkey, Daisy Mae has arthritis in her knees and requires a special medication 2x a day, every day.

Darby is 31 years old, and while he may be one of our older horses, don't let his age fool you! Darby is quite intelligent and extremely well trained. While he has officially retired from being ridden, he still loves to work with clients who need some extra attention and hugs.

Darby likes soft voices and gentle touches, and he loves nothing more than our donkey Daisy Mae!

Darby can no longer eat hay (it's too rough for his teeth), so he requires a special food called mush. It's made of alfalfa cubes and senior feed, mixed up and soaked so that it's soft for me to eat. It's an expensive alternative to hay, but Darby loves it and it keeps him healthy. :)

Doc is a 12-year-old Tennessee Walker with beautiful blue eyes. Doc can be quite the goofball, and our volunteers say that he's the clumsiest horse they've ever seen - he gets so excited to meet new people that he loses control of his legs sometimes. :)

Known to be a goofball, Doc loves being the center of attention and works best with teenage clients. He is one of the kindest, most loving horses we have on the ranch.

Some of Doc's favorite things are apples and getting to drink out of a freshly poured water bucket.

Kid is our 23-year-old thoroughbred and New Day Ranch CEO Beth Long's "heart horse." Being a heart horse is unique - it's like being someone's soulmate, providing unconditional love and a special partnership of mutual understanding and adoration.

Before Kid joined NDR he was a "mud runner," racing until 2004 - right before he was gifted to Beth by R.C. Durr. This is where New Day Ranch's story begins: Kid was/is the inspiration behind this organization and our programs.

Kid is smart, personable, and empathetic to the people and horses around him. His best friend is Cash, and one of Kid's favorite things to do is go outside on fall days and run like he did when he was younger.

Goliath is a 13-year-old Haflinger pony who steals the heart of everyone he meets thanks to his peek-a-boo bangs and approachable size.

New Day Ranch rescued Goliath about 9 years ago when we saw that he and his brother were suffering from severe arthritis as the result of pulling wagons too heavy and at too young of an age. To make sure Goliath is comfortable for his clients, he receives a daily arthritis medicine and a carefully balanced diet.

Goliath's specialty is working with young autistic clients, given his calm and patient demeanor.

JT, short for Johnny Travis, is a 16-year-old Quarter horse that New Day Ranch rescued several years ago.

When meeting new clients, JT likes to take their backpacks or grooming brushes out of their hands so he can play with them himself.

JT limps on one of his front legs due to a prior injury before arriving at NDR, but it doesn't hurt him thanks to the medication he receives on a daily basis.

King is a 23-year-old Quarter Horse, and around New Day Ranch, he's known as our rock solid "Go To" horse. King works best with adult clients who respect his boundaries, but he also helps us teach young clients about the importance of respecting boundaries and personal space.

King's popularity with our clients means he does a LOT of walking, so he requires shoes to maintain healthy feet. And we all know the importance of good walking shoes!

So while we might not be buying him Nikes, we do have to replace King's shoes every six weeks. Added to the cost of King's feed, hay, and supplements, his footwear becomes an expensive need.

Mack is an 18-year-old Morgan horse and is the newest addition to our ranch, joining us this past March. Mack is a bit on the smaller size and a total sweetheart who gets along well with all his new friends.

Max is a 13-year-old appendix horse, meaning that he's part Quarter horse and part Thoroughbred. He's quite tall and playful, and he loves to give hugs.

Max does best with patient clients who like a challenge. While he's kind and loving, he sometimes gets so excited meeting new people that he doesn't want to stand still.

Max's best friend on the ranch is Simba, one of our newest additions. They hit it off immediately upon Simba joining us.

Mia, an 18-year-old Quarter horse, joined the New Day Ranch squad in 2021. She's the first full-size mare to live here!

Mia is full of love and patience, and she tends to gravitate towards the female clients who come to NDR. She has an "LB" branded on her from earlier in her life - we think it must stand for Love Bug due to her sweet, loving nature.

She also loves a good spa day: being groomed, having her feet done, and getting a hair trim. :)

Rocky is a 21-year-old Arabian horse who lived on the property before it became New Day Ranch! At that time, Rocky worked as a horse who trained new jockeys on how to ride. He lived and worked alongside his sister Joelle.

When she passed a few years ago, Rocky fell into a depression - enter New Day Ranch! Rocky was put to work in our programs and turned out to be a natural at being a therapy horse. We now use him in almost every program we offer, since Rocky is very in tune with the emotions of our clients - if they're sad, he becomes sad; if they're anxious, he becomes anxious. This reflection of emotion can help clients better understand what they're feeling.

Mia is Rocky's field buddy, and we're pretty sure it was love at first sight!

Simba is one of the newest horses at New Day Ranch, joining the pack in 2021 and working primarily with our teenage clients.

Simba's best friend is Max; they became instant friends on Simba's first day at the ranch. They're so close that they even scratch each other's back - literally!

Stranger is a 16-year-old Standard Bred. Sometimes he intimidates clients because of how large he is, but staff and volunteers alike know that he's really a big marshmallow. :)

Stranger likes to work with clients who are calm and gentle. He gets nervous when people are too loud or outgoing, and clients have to earn this smart boy's trust.

Meet Baloo the Cat, one of the newest members of the Barnyard:

Hello! I am a 5 yeas old barn cat and just recently came to New Day Ranch with my sister Sheeba. A fun fact about me is that I'm named after the bear from The Jungle Book!

I am very large, but that doesn't stop me from climbing to the tippy top of all shelves I can find! I also own my very own bakery called "Baloo's Biscuits" where all biscuits are handcrafted by my little paws. ;)

I love to be held, loved on, and have my belly scratched!

Meet Bandit the Goat:

I am a 5-year-old hybrid mini goat, and I'm the opposite of my brother Bentley. I'm an introvert at heart and picky about the other animals and people I allow to get close to me. Since I'm not very social, folks sometimes overlook me.

I love to sit alongside a kindred spirit - aka, a very quiet person - and be loved on. I'll give you kisses in return and let you rub my head if I feel a connection to you!

I also love spending time with Bridget and Faith. They are my best friends and I worry when I don't see them nearby. If you don't vote for me, vote for one my besties! ;)

Meet Bentley the Goat:

Hi, friends! I am a 6-year-old hybrid mini goat, and I was the first small goat to become part of New Day Ranch's therapeutic programs.

I'm known around here as the Walmart greeter, since I love to be around people - I may even rub my head against you to show you how much I like you!

I love meeting new friends, both of the human and animal variety. I also love Goldfish crackers and strawberries. If I win, I've been told my prize could include my favorite treats... so exciting!

Meet Bolt the Goat:

I was born on December 29, 2019. There was a huge thunderstorm in the middle of the night when I was born. My mom must have gotten scared by the storm and left me all alone, so Maggie and Beth were asked if I could come to New Day Ranch!

Maggie became my new mom, bottle-feeding me four times a day when I was a baby and letting me live with her. I still follow her around like I'm her shadow - I love her so much!

You may also see me with the alpacas. I like to sleep with them every night because they are nice and warm. They have taken the roles of being my "alpaca dads". They teach me manners and protect me from anything that might hurt me.

I love my life so very much! I've dressed up for every holiday since I was born. I love being the center of attention. :)

For me to stay healthy I have to take medication every day. My medication is very expensive, but without it, I wouldn't be able to live. It's important for me to take it regularly so that I stay happy and healthy. So thank you in advance for your support!

Meet Bridget the Miniature Horse:

I am a 13-year-old mini horse, full of sass! I love being the center of attention, especially when I get attention from my boyfriend, Kid.

I LOVE having spa days. Getting a bath, being groomed, or having my hair cut just makes my day!

My best friend Faith and I have been together for a long time and spend most of our time with one another. I like to boss all the other animals around so that they know I'm in charge.

I have very bad allergies and need to take two different medications every day. This medicine prevents me from having an allergy attack and not being able to breathe. Your votes for me will help offset the cost of this important part of my daily routine!

Meet Daisy the Sheep:

Hi, friends! I'm a four-year-old sheep who spent the last year feeling a little bit lost after my best friend and twin sister Dandy passed away. She protected me and gave me confidence when I felt scared. But I have new friends - like Bentley the Goat and Silas the Alpaca - who have helped me regain my confidence, and I'm able to use my heartache to help New Day Ranch clients. I love meeting new people, and sometimes I even dress up for them in fancy hats and headbands!

I'm currently the reigning Queen of the Ranch thanks to everyone who voted for me in 2021 - I'd love to keep my title this year, so vote early and often for me! ;)

Meet Faith the Miniature Donkey:

Hi, all! My name is Faith and I am a 12-year-old mini donkey. Donkeys are known to protect their herd from anything that could hurt them. I am a very good protector and I try to keep all of the other zoo animals in line (even Fiona!). I love my protector job and try to keep my herd safe every day.

You can see me hanging out with my best friend Bridget most of the time. Some of my favorite foods are fresh watermelon and apples!

Meet Fiona the Pig:

I am a 4-year-old miniature potbelly pig, and whether I win the voting competition or not we all know I'm the queen of this zoo! ;)

I was rescued by New Day Ranch when I was just a baby of 1-year-old. Since then, I have gotten comfortable with all of my friends and love to wander around the Ranch. I am also potty trained, and I like to keep my stall clean.

Some of my favorite things to do are to go on adventures around the Ranch and take snoozles in the sawdust shed. Despite my fluffy body, I eat very healthy - I love strawberries and bananas!

Meet Frankie the Cat:

I was rescued by New Day Ranch earlier this year from the Boone County Animal Shelter. Before I got there, I was attacked by an animal and had to go through many surgeries to get better. My odds of surviving weren't good, but now I'm all healed and you can't even see my scar. I'm a feisty survivor!

Some people told Beth and Maggie that I wouldn't be a "good fit" with kids or other cats. But I've shown everyone how a little love and patience can go a long way - I now love to be around kids, adults, and my kitty friends.

My nickname is Frankie Flop because every time I lie down to snooze, I flop over on my back!

Meet Nugget the Guinea Pig:

My name is Nugget, and I am a one-year-old Guinea Pig. I like to bury myself in the pockets and hoodies of New Day Ranch clients. It's warm in there!

I also love to hide under the hay in my house, and I like to stay hydrated by frequently drinking out of my water bottle.

Squish and I enjoy our jobs and are happy to help clients of New Day Ranch to better express themselves and to ease their nervousness of being around animals!

Meet Sheeba the Cat:

My name is Sheeba and I am 4 years old. I'm new to the ranch and came here with my brother Baloo. We are still learning our way around, but we are settling in nicely and getting to know our new family!

I love to make biscuits with my paws like my brother. I also love to sit in my cat tower all day - so it only makes sense that I should be voted Queen of the Ranch, right?

Meet Sherbert the Cat:

Hello! I'm a 2-year-old long-haired cat known around the ranch as the "Lil' Barn Manager." I was adopted by New Day Ranch earlier this year from the Boone County Animal Shelter after a difficult life. Before I got to the shelter, I was dehydrated, matted, and underweight. With the help of the Boone County Animal Shelter, I was able to get back to being a normal cat. :)

Since arriving at New Day Ranch, I have come into my own personality! I am so loved by all the staff, clients, and volunteers. Some of my favorite things to do are climb trees, ride in the John Deere, and watch what the volunteers are doing. I love to make sure everyone is staying on task, so I guess that's why I got the title that I did!

Meet Sailas the Alpaca:

Greetings! I am a fifteen-year-old alpaca. My best friend Bezi and I came to New Day Ranch about six years ago.

Before coming here, we weren't handled a lot by humans so we were a bit nervous at first. But after some time, we realized that people just wanted to help us and love us!

We were so happy when Baby Bolt the Goat joined us in 2020. The staff struggled with where to put Bolt so that he would be safe. We are the most kind-hearted and loving animals, so Bezi and I knew just what to do - we adopted him as our own! I showed my nurturing and loving side to Bolt, lying with him every single day and night and giving him the majority of the hay we share. We were so happy to take Bolt in as our own - so much so that I get stressed if Bolt is out of my sight. I will do anything to protect him!

Meet Squish the Guinea Pig:

I am a one-year-old Guinea Pig at New Day Ranch. I love to be held and loved! Some of my favorite things to do are to hide in my house and dump over my food to get to the good pieces before my housemate Nugget gets to it.

Nugget and I are responsible for working with New Day Ranch clients who may be nervous talking about why they're coming to NDR or may be too scared of the bigger animals. We can be held by the clients and provide them comfort while they explain difficult things going on in their lives. We take our jobs seriously and are so glad we can help!

Meet Tongabeezy the Alpaca:

My nickname is Bezi, and I'm a 15-year-old alpaca! I came to New Day Ranch with my best friend Sailas. I am a bit more shy than Sailas but I still am just as curious as he is!

One of my favorite things to do is to play with Bolt the Goat. I love to hang out with him throughout the day. During the summer months, I also love to get sprayed with a hose! I get really hot thanks to my thick fiber (fur) and need some time to cool down with a good watering. I also don't mind being sheared in the summer, since a nice buzz cut helps keep me cool too. :)
