Artist Statement: I was exploring the South Rim intrigued with the sunlight which created great highlights and shadows against the layers of rock formation trying to find a unique vantage point for a painting. The shape and texture of the fallen tree caught my eye looking like a large still life placed against the background of the Grand Canyon that gave me an interesting perspective I was looking for. As I was observing the scene, a western blue bird landed on one of the limbs and its beautiful bright blue color gave a stark contrast to the surroundings. I watched it perched until it flew off and thought it was even more beautiful in flight. After I completed the painting at my studio, I added the blue bird in flight and thought that the addition of a large female Peregrine Falcon. The final composition now incorporates landscape, still life, and native wildlife. By adding the falcon in pursuit of bird, its primary diet, I was not only able to create a subtle tension and drama to the scene, but also call attention to the most efficient aerial predator at the Grand Canyon and the conservation effort.
