I grew up in a small town in the Mississippi Delta in the 1960's and 70's, an area which has been described as "the most southern place on earth" because of its unique racial and cultural history. On one hand, the rural south was idyllic and pastoral, with pristine woods, bodies of water, and open fields to navigate and explore. On the other hand, it was also a time rife with racism, overt homophobia and the ubiquitous hand of Christianity. These conditions and experiences contributed greatly to my role as an artist and to related themes I have explored off and on in my work. Although I am not formally educated in art or ceramics, I have taken numerous workshops around the US. For several years, I studied drawing and painting at Georgia State and focused on ceramics for several years at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta. My residencies include Gaya Center Arts Center in Bali, Indonesia, The Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO, and The Hambidge Creative Residency Program in Rabun Gap, GA. During the summer of 2018, I was invited to be a visiting artist at the Ceramics Department at the University of Georgia.
