"Empire" by Hank Gans '66, is a stunning 35" x 24" black-and-white landscape photograph of New York City captured while Gans was on assignment as a still photographer for a feature film. While the crew was rigging lights on a penthouse balcony at dusk for a nighttime scene, Gans photographed a quintessential view of Manhattan with the Empire State Building at its center.
Gans has a long term affinity for the Empire State Building which has been a subject for many of his photographs over six decades. Starting when he was five years old his grandfather used to take him to breakfast in the Automat in the base of the Empire State Building! He had his first cup of coffee there when he was nine. He started to photograph this iconic building when he was 12. His cityscapes which feature the Empire State Building are in museums and private collections worldwide.
