0Orange Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)
This rugged bushy species features large, flat-topped clusters of bright-orange flowers throughout summer. Although it can be toxic if not properly prepared, Native Americans used Butterfly Weed as a food and its tough fibers for making cords and coarse cloth. The roots were highly valued for medicinal purposes and some Native Americans conducted a ceremony around the harvesting of this plant. Later, the roots were known as "pleurisy root" and used into the 20th century to treat lung, bronchial and pulmonary problems. Butterfly Weed attracts legions of butterflies.
