5Blue Baptisia or Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis)
A long-lived and vigorous plant that is drought tolerant and requires little maintenance, Wild Indigo grows 3' to 4' tall. It has blue flowers from late spring to early summer and is known for its lovely blue-green foliage. Native Americans used Wild Indigo for a variety of medicinal purposes including an antiseptic, for snakebite, fevers, toothache, nausea, and as an anti-inflammatory. They also used Wild Indigo to create a blue dye, a practice later copied by European settlers. Wild Indigo is popular for bumblebees.
