Black Huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata)

Black Huckleberry is found throughout New Jersey and the eastern United States. The leaves turn red in autumn before falling. The berries are very similar to blueberries but have larger, harder seeds. Huckleberries can be eaten fresh, jellied, or baked into pancakes, muffins, and many other items. Native Americans cooked, mashed, and dried huckleberries in the sun as cakes. The berries are also an important food source for many animals and birds.
