0Sweet Fern (Comptonia peregrine)
Sweet Fern is a small, aromatic mound-shaped shrub, two to four feet tall, occurring in dense colonies. Has small brown flowers before the leaves unfold. A small nut is enclosed in a bur-like husk.
An interesting and vigorous plant for native plant gardens or naturalized areas where it can be left alone to colonize. It will do well in poor soils and can be used for stabilizing slopes. An important larval host plant for a wide variety of moths and as well as the Anise Swallowtail butterfly. The leaves are very aromatic when crushed and can be used as seasoning or tea. The foliage has a similar smell to ferns leading to its name. Its leaves were used medicinally by Native Americans as a poultice to treat a variety of complaints.
