Boneset or Thoroughwort (Eupatorium perfoliatum)

Boneset produces numerous large white or purple flower clusters throughout summer. A favorite medicine of Native Americans, it was once used as a cure-all in the United States for the common cold, coughs, and various other ailments. The advent of aspirin in the 20th century displaced Boneset as a popular remedy. Though its effectiveness has been debated in recent years, the leaves were believed to be useful in setting bones and were wrapped with bandages around splints. The nectar of the flowers attracts butterflies and bees.
