Virginia Bluebell (Mertensia virginica)

Growing fast in the spring, the flowers start off pink and gradually turn a beautiful shade of light blue as they mature. Blooming in April and May, the plant will go dormant by mid-summer. Native Americans used Virginia Bluebell to treat whooping cough and tuberculosis, and employed its roots as a treatment for venereal disease and an antidote for poisons. A favorite early flower for bees, butterflies, and moths.
