0New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus)
New Jersey Tea is a low shrub with tiny white flowers in oval clusters during June and July. The dried leaves make an excellent tea that was a very popular substitute for English tea during the Revolutionary War. Its red roots and root bark were used by Native Americans for infections of the upper respiratory tract. The flowers are popular with butterflies and its seeds are eaten by wild turkey and quail.
